Wang Yi, special representative of Chinese President Xi Jinping, on Monday called on major countries to serve as propellers for world solidarity and anchors for international peace.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and Chinese foreign minister, made the remarks while addressing the UN Summit of the Future in New York.
As the world faces unprecedented changes, Wang emphasized the significance of the summit in uniting efforts for world peace and development, as well as in outlining a blueprint for humanity’s future. He stated that “Humanity has only one planet Earth, and we belong to the same global community. It is vital that we care for our shared home and work together to enhance global governance.”
To tackle the common challenges of humanity and build a better world, Wang outlined China’s four propositions.
He called for promoting peace and stability, emphasizing that in a turbulent world, no country remains unaffected. Solidarity and cooperation among nations are essential, and he urged countries, particularly major powers, to resolve disputes through dialogue instead of geopolitical tensions or bloc confrontations.
Wang also stressed the importance of fostering development and prosperity, saying all countries should share development opportunities and pursue win-win cooperation to ensure common prosperity for all countries. He expressed opposition to the notion of “small yard with high fences,” saying such approaches would only serve to divide the world.
Fairness and justice are also highlighted in Wang’s speech. He said all countries, regardless of their size and strength, are equal members of the international community. He firmly opposed the law of the jungle and acts of hegemonism such as unilateral sanctions, urging to protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries and promote greater democracy in international relations.
As he discussed the rapid advancements in technology and industrial transformation, Wang proposed that nations must adapt to these changes, explore new practices, and strive for a more equitable global governance system. He, in particular, mentioned AI governance, saying China supports the UN in serving as the main channel in AI governance, and will propose the AI Capacity-Building Action Plan for Good and for All. He encouraged the young people to contribute to the advancement of humankind.
To conclude his speech, Wang said China today is pursuing national rejuvenation through modernization, which he said will create new opportunities for world peace and development.
“China will work hand in hand with countries around the world to advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind and create a more peaceful and better tomorrow,” Wang said.
