BEIJING: The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday urged the United States to stop arms sales to the Taiwan region and cut military ties with the island.
In response to reports that the U.S. Department of Defense has approved the sale to the Taiwan region of “advanced tactical data link system upgrade plan” worth $75 million, Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said the Chinese side will take resolute and forceful measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
With arms sales to Taiwan region, the United States has seriously violated the one-China principle and provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, especially the August 17 Communique, seriously undermined China’s sovereignty and security interests, and severely jeopardized China-U.S. relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, said Mao.
“China has always been firmly opposed to this,” she said.
The spokesperson urged the U.S. to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques, stop arms sales to Taiwan region, cut military ties with it, and stop creating tension in the Taiwan Straits.
