ISLAMABAD: The Senate has passed the Election Act Amendment Bill 2024 by a majority vote, following its approval in the National Assembly.

The government benches in the Senate had 30 members present during the vote.

The opposition, with 15 members in attendance, did not propose any amendments to the bill, said Senator Farooq H. Naek.

“Once the bill is passed, no further debate is permitted,” Senator Naek stated.

Opposition members strongly protested in the Senate. “Parliament is supreme, and if any institution interferes, I will stand with parliament,” declared Senator Ali Zafar.

“The judiciary set a poor precedent by ruling on the election symbols issue,” he added.

“Parliament makes the laws. If a law is unconstitutional, the courts can nullify it,” Senator Naek asserted.

The opposition expects the Supreme Court to nullify the law.

The Senate session has been adjourned until 10:30am on Friday.
