US-Iran peace deal could benefit entire region, PM tells Pezeshkian in Eid call

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a telephonic conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday hoped that a peace deal between Iran and the US could be finalised soon.

The Prime Minister’s Office in a statement said that President Pezeshkian had telephoned PM Shehbaz to extend Eid greetings in a call that lasted around 30 minutes.

During the call, PM Shehbaz hoped that a peace deal which afforded dignity and honour to the Iranian nation could be reached soon. “This would help unlock the true economic potential of Iran and benefit the entire region,” the premier said.

The prime minister stated that as a brotherly and neighbouring country, “Pakistan would always stand by Iran and that a great future lay ahead for both countries, once peace was restored in the region.”

The two leaders also exchanged Eid greetings and conveyed their best wishes to each other, the people of their two countries, and the Muslim Ummah, the PMO added.

“The Iranian president expressed his profound gratitude to the prime minister and Field Marshal Asim Munir for Pakistan’s important role in the efforts to bring peace to the region.

“He appreciated the fact that other regional countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkiye, were also on board in these peace efforts,” it stated.

The prime minister once again expressed solidarity with the Iranian leadership and nation over the loss of precious Iranian lives suffered in the current crisis, the PMO said.

“He appreciated the Iranian president’s kind words for him and his team and stated that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir had undoubtedly made tireless efforts to bring peace to the region, the PMO said, adding, “The two leaders agreed to remain in close coordination with each other.”

Trump ties Iran deal to Abraham Accords

0

WASHINGTON: United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that he had asked countries, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan and Turkiye, to join the Abraham Accords en masse to normalise relations with Israel as he tries to negotiate an agreement to end the war with Iran.

Trump said he spoke on Saturday to leaders of those countries, as well as the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, which have already signed the accords, a set of agreements to normalise relations with Israel.

“I am mandatorily requesting that all countries immediately sign the Abraham Accords, and that, if Iran signs its agreement with me, as President of the United States of America, it would be an Honor to have them also be part of this unparalleled World Coalition,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

He cited “all the work done by the US to try and pull this very complex puzzle together.”

Trump said those countries would be honoured to have Iran as part of the accords once a deal to end the war is reached. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump’s post. The other countries cited by Trump did not immediately respond to the Abraham Accords post.

Trump said one or two of the countries he spoke with may have a reason for not joining, but most should be “ready, willing, and able to make this settlement with Iran a far more historic event than it would otherwise be.”

Trump also said negotiations with Iran were “proceeding nicely”, but gave no indication a deal was imminent.

Longtime Trump ally Senator Lindsey Graham has embraced the idea of linking an Iran deal to expanding the Abraham Accords as “beyond transformative for the region and world.”

China condemns Pakistan train attack, vows stronger counterterrorism cooperation

BEIJING: When asked to comment on the bomb attack against a passenger train in Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Sunday which has caused heavy casualties, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that China strongly condemns the terrorist attack, firmly opposes all forms of terrorism and will continue to firmly support Pakistan in combating terrorism.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed to take responsibility for the blast. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on X that he strongly condemns the heinous bomb explosion near Chaman Phatak, Quetta, which has resulted in the tragic loss of innocent lives and left many others injured, and Pakistan remains steadfast in its determination to eliminate terrorism in all its forms.

During a regular press briefing on Monday, Mao said that China has noticed the relevant reports and strongly condemns the terrorist attack. “China expresses deep condolences over the victims and extends sincere sympathies to the injured and the families of the deceased,” Mao said.

Mao also noted that China will continue to support Pakistan in maintaining social unity and stability, and protecting the safety of its people. China is willing to further strengthen counterterrorism cooperation with Pakistan to jointly safeguard regional peace, security, and stability, said Mao.

Naqvi-PTI meeting triggers controversy

ISLAMABAD: A quietly held meeting between senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has triggered a debate of possible back channel contacts between the opposition party and powers that be and also raised questions over internal communication and coordination within the party after it emerged that party founding chairman Imran Khan’s family had no prior knowledge of the engagement.

A post circulating on X on Sunday initially claimed that Imran’s sister Aleema Khan was present during a meeting involving PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi with the interior minister.

Aleema Khan swiftly rejected the claim on X, clarifying that no member of Imran Khan’s family was present at the meeting and that the family had not been informed beforehand. Her denial, however, inadvertently confirmed the meeting’s existence, setting off a chain of queries that brought the encounter into public focus.

Rumours regarding a meeting between Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and the interior minister at the former’s residence had been circulating for several days, although neither PTI nor Barrister Gohar had confirmed it during that period.

The matter remained publicly unaddressed until Aleema Khan’s statement brought it into the spotlight, after which Sohail Afridi’s name also surfaced in connection with the meeting and was later acknowledged by PTI’s senior leadership in response to queries.

Diplomag reached out to Barrister Gohar Ali Khan for confirmation of the reported meeting and its agenda. He confirmed that the meeting had taken place and reiterated that no member of Imran Khan’s family was present. However, he did not respond to further questions regarding the agenda or detailed points of discussion.

Separately, PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas said he had personally contacted Barrister Gohar, who confirmed the meeting and the presence of Sohail Afridi. He stated that the meeting took place on May 14 and was strictly related to law and order matters, including the Bannu security situation and broader public order concerns.

He further said that Imran Khan’s family was not informed about the meeting as the matter did not concern them, adding that Barrister Gohar, as part of the party’s senior leadership, was authorised to engage in such discussions. According to him, participants maintained that the discussion remained limited to security and public order issues.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chief minister, in a post on X while quote-tweeting Aleema Khan, also confirmed that his meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was held in relation to recent terrorist incidents in Bannu and the broader law and order situation in the province. He categorically stated that no political discussion took place during the meeting, adding that reports suggesting otherwise were incorrect.

The Bannu security context cited by Afridi is grounded in a recent and serious incident. On the night of May 9, five days before the meeting took place, a devastating attack struck a police outpost in Bannu district when an explosives-laden vehicle was rammed into the post, followed by a coordinated assault involving heavy weaponry and drones.

The attack was claimed by Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, a newly emerged armed group. In the days that followed, a joint operation by the Pakistan Army, police and Counter Terrorism Department was launched in the area, killing 16 terrorists including two commanders. It is against this immediate backdrop that PTI representatives have described the May 14 meeting as being focused on law and order and security coordination.

While the K-P chief minister’s clarification addressed the nature of the meeting, the development has nevertheless drawn attention in political circles due to questions surrounding its timing and the limited public awareness around it.

The development comes against the backdrop of prolonged concerns over Imran Khan’s health during his incarceration at Adiala Jail.

Khan was taken to PIMS on a few occasions in recent months for treatment of a deteriorating eye condition, with his legal team filing petitions in the Islamabad High Court seeking access to specialist care and the presence of his personal physicians.

A follow-up examination by a joint medical board in March reported improvement in his condition, though the family disputed the government’s assessment and insisted no medical decisions should be taken without their consent.

The episode has also drawn renewed attention to a recurring tension between the Khan family and the party’s senior leadership over internal communication and consultation.

In February, Aleema Khan publicly rebuked the party leadership over its handling of the medical situation, objecting to what she described as decisions taken without the family’s knowledge.

Gohar himself acknowledged a communication gap within the leadership at the time, while stressing that efforts for Imran Khan’s release remained coordinated.

The latest episode in which a meeting with the interior minister was held and only came to light through a social media post appears to reflect that same unresolved tension.

Xi hails ‘unbreakable’ Pakistan ties, praises Iran peace efforts

BEIJING: President Xi Jinping hailed China’s “unbreakable” ‌friendship with Pakistan on Monday as he met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Beijing, seeking to deepen their “all-weather” partnership.

Xi welcomed the Pakistani leader as an “old friend” at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People as the two countries mark 75 years of diplomatic relations.

He said the two countries had “understood, trusted and supported each other” over decades, adding, “No matter how the international situation changes, China always prioritises the development of China-Pakistan relations in its neighbourhood diplomacy.”

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, and other senior officials were present on the Pakistani side.

PM Shehbaz said Pakistan and China are “proudly celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations,” paying tribute to the founding fathers of both nations for laying the foundation of their enduring partnership, according to Pakistan TV.

Reaffirming the “iron-brother” relationship, he added both countries remain committed to taking bilateral ties “from strength to strength” through year-long celebrations and deeper strategic cooperation.

In his address, President Xi extended warm greetings to the people of Pakistan while welcoming PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Munir to China. He praised Pakistan’s constructive role and peace efforts in the region, saying the two countries had for 75 years stood together with mutual trust, unwavering support, and an unbreakable traditional friendship that continues to strengthen strategic cooperation and shared development, according to Pakistan TV.

Separately, PM Shehbaz said Pakistan had played a “very sincere role” in efforts to mediate between the US and Iran, as he held high-level talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing focused on regional stability, bilateral cooperation and deepening strategic ties.

During the meeting at the Great Hall of the People, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding shared interests and promoting peace amid rising tensions in the Gulf.

The prime minister is in China on a four-day visit from May 23-26. The visit is expected to highlight a new chapter in the 75-year-old China-Pakistan relationship, which has long been recognised for mutual trust and enduring cooperation despite changing international circumstances, according to a commentary published on China’s CGTN website.

Referring to the ongoing regional crisis, the prime minister said the world was passing through “a very critical moment” and stressed the need for collective efforts to restore stability. “We have to really be together so that the world at large is at peace,” he said.

PM Shehbaz noted that Pakistan had remained actively engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation between the US and Iran. He said Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir had just returned from Tehran after consultations with Iranian officials and travelled overnight to attend the Beijing engagements.

The prime minister added that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar had also been in contact with relevant regional stakeholders to support peace efforts. “We pray to Allah Almighty that peace will be restored. A lot of ground has been covered, and things are moving in the right direction,” he said.

He warned that the crisis had impacted both regional and global economies, particularly oil-importing countries such as Pakistan. “Pakistan, being a net importer of oil and petroleum products, has also felt the economic impact,” he said.

Calling the visit “always a great pleasure”, the prime minister thanked the Chinese leadership for its warm hospitality. “Dear brother and friend, thank you very much for the very warm invitation to visit China,” he said. “Each time we come, we see new changes and major developments.”

Train attack in Quetta leaves 14 martyred, including three FC personnel

QUETTA: At least 14 people, including three Frontier Corps (FC) personnel, were martyred and several others critically injured in a terrorist attack near the Chaman Phatak area of Quetta, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) confirmed on Sunday.

“The deliberate targeting of civilians, which included women, children, and ordinary passengers among the affected, highlights how these elements intentionally attack soft civilian targets to spread fear and instability rather than confront the state directly,” the military’s media wing added.

It stated that the attack “reflects the desperation of anti-Pakistan terrorist proxies seeking to disturb peace and create panic through indiscriminate violence against innocent people during a period of improving stability and normalcy.”

According to the ISPR, security forces and law enforcement agencies responded immediately to the site, cordoned off the area, initiated investigations, and are actively pursuing all facilitators and perpetrators involved in the attack.

Further, the media wing stated that the martyrdom of the FC personnel while protecting civilians “reinforces the continued sacrifices being rendered by Pakistan’s security forces to safeguard public life against externally backed terrorist violence.”

Concluding the statement, the ISPR stated that such attacks cannot weaken public resolve, as the people of Pakistan, particularly the citizens of Balochistan, continue to reject terrorism and stand with the state and security institutions against enemies of peace and stability.

According to police, the explosion occurred at approximately 8:15am near Chaman Phatak when a train was passing through the area. Railway officials said terrorists targeted the train, causing a fire to erupt in one of the bogies.

Fire brigade and rescue teams reached the site and initiated relief operations, while the injured were shifted to Civil Hospital, BMC, and other trauma centres where an emergency was declared.

According to authorities, women and children remain among those injured, while the condition of five injured persons is said to be critical.

According to sources, most of the passengers aboard the train were travelling to their native areas for the Eidul Azha holidays.

The explosion was so intense that the windows of nearby buildings and residential flats were shattered, while several vehicles also caught fire. According to police, a husband, wife, and their 13-year-old daughter residing in a nearby flat were also martyred in the explosion. Eyewitnesses said the sound of the blast was heard from far away, after which severe panic spread throughout the area.

Following the incident, security forces cordoned off the area and launched an investigation to determine the nature of the explosion. Checkpoints have been established at the city’s entry and exit points, and the checking process has been further tightened.

Further, train service on the affected track has been suspended, while railway heavy machinery remains engaged in clearing debris and restoring the track so that movement can be resumed as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reached Quetta following the attack, chairing a special meeting alongside Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, the Interior Ministry announced on X.

According to the ministry, during the meeting, the inspector general of Balochistan police presented an initial report on the blast. Law enforcement officers were also present in the meeting.

“The meeting strongly condemned the cowardly attack on innocent people,” the ministry wrote. In a separate post, it added that CM Bugti expressed his gratitude to Naqvi, saying that the interior minister has stood with Balochistan in every difficult time.

“We are indebted to the blood of the martyrs,” Bugti said. He also noted that the families of the martyrs will not be abandoned.

Further, the CM stated that he is personally overseeing the treatment and care of those injured.

President Asif Ali Zardari

President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the terrorist attack and vowed decisive defeat of the perpetrators and their networks.

Expressing deep grief over the loss of innocent lives, President Zardari said such acts of terrorism are aimed at harming the people of Pakistan and diverting attention from the country’s efforts for global peace, according to a statement issued by the President’s Secretariat.

President Zardari stated that “elements hostile to Pakistan are attempting to undermine our initiatives that serve broader humanitarian objectives, global peace and progress,” adding that “terrorists and their patrons are also seeking to disrupt Pakistan’s focus on stability and development.”

The president noted that “there should be no doubt that Pakistan will defeat terrorists, their facilitators, financiers and those providing them safe havens,” adding that the country would “thwart every conspiracy against peace, stability and national security.”

Further, President Zardari stated that Pakistan will “neither forget nor forgive the terrorists and their patrons.”

Stating that the blood of the martyrs will not go in vain and every drop will be accounted for, he urged the world to recognise the true face of terrorists and their patrons who are attempting, unsuccessfully, to derail Pakistan’s global peace efforts.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the “heinous bomb explosion,” stating, “Such cowardly acts of terrorism cannot weaken the resolve of the people of Pakistan.”

In a post on X, PM Shehbaz reaffirmed, “We remain steadfast in our determination to eliminate terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.”

The premier also expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, praying for the swift recovery of those injured.

“The entire nation stands in solidarity with the people of Balochistan in this hour of grief,” PM Shehbaz concluded his statement.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar condemned “the savage act of terrorism,” extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and prayers for the swift recovery of the injured.

DPM Dar also paid tribute to the first responders, police, armed forces, rescue, and health personnel for their courage and efforts in assisting those affected.

“We stand in complete solidarity with the people of Balochistan at this difficult time,” he said, adding that those responsible for this cowardly attack against innocent civilians will be brought to justice.

“Such heinous acts cannot and will not weaken Pakistan’s resolve to eradicate terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” DPM Dar concluded.

Balochistan CM Sarfraz Bugti

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti also condemned the attack, saying that the “terrorists of Fitna Al-Hindustan are proving their savagery by targeting innocent civilians, women, and children.”

He added, “Those who shed the blood of innocent people deserve no leniency.”

CM Bugti also issued a warning to terrorist elements in the region, saying “Let the enemy hear this: there will be no safe haven left for terrorists in Balochistan. We will hunt down the terrorists, their facilitators, and their masterminds one by one and bring them to justice, and this war will continue until the last terrorist is eliminated.”

CM Adviser Shahid Rind

Adviser to the Chief Minister Balochistan for Political and Media Affairs Shahid Rind said terrorists carried out a cowardly act by targeting unarmed civilians, women, and children. He added that attacks on public places are proof of the terrorists’ panic and that the blood of the martyrs will not go in vain.

Rind noted that CM Bugti is personally monitoring the situation.

Health Minister Bakht Muhammad Kakar

Further, according to Provincial Health Minister Bakht Muhammad Kakar, an emergency has been declared at all major hospitals in the city, while doctors, paramedical staff, and medical personnel are providing medical assistance to the injured.

Governor K-P Faisal Karim Kundi

Governor Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Faisal Karim Kundi expressed sorrow and grief over the loss of precious human lives in “this heinous act of terrorism.”

“Such attacks by anti-state elements cannot and will not shake Pakistan’s resolve or disturb our pursuit of peace and stability,” Kundi said in a statement on X. He added, “We remain resolute, united, and firmly standing shoulder to shoulder with our armed forces in the complete eradication of terrorism from our homeland.”

CM K-P Sohail Afridi

Chief Minister K-P Sohail Afridi also expressed heartfelt sympathy and condolences to those martyred in the “cowardly act of terrorism.” He added that the attack was “a serious crime against humanity.”

“Targeting innocent civilians reflects open brutality and the failed mindset of anti-peace elements,” the chief minister stated.

“Terrorism is not a challenge for any single province or region but a shared challenge for the entire country,” he said, noting that a joint and sustained strategy is essential for the complete eradication of terrorism.

CM Afridi noted that the government and people of K-P stand with the people of Balochistan, offering prayers for the elevated ranks of the martyrs and for the speedy recovery of those injured.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq strongly denounced the deadly explosion and expressed profound grief over the tragic loss of innocent lives, the National Assembly wrote on X.

According to the post, Sadiq “reiterated that such heinous acts of terrorism cannot shake the resolve of the nation, which remains firmly committed to peace, stability, and the complete eradication of terrorism from the country.”

The speaker also emphasised, according to the National Assembly, that the nation will always stand shoulder to shoulder with its Armed Forces in their efforts to fully eliminate terrorism in all its forms.

Sadiq offered prayers for those martyred and for the swift recovery of those injured. He also prayed for strength, patience, and courage for the bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss, the post concluded.

Pakistan hopes to host next round of US-Iran peace talks very soon: PM Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday said that Pakistan hopes to host the next round of US-Iran talks “very soon,” as diplomatic efforts push toward a possible agreement. He pledged that Pakistan would continue its peace efforts “with utmost sincerity.”

In a post on X, PM Shehbaz congratulated US President Donald Trump for actively engaging in peace prospects by having a “very useful” and “productive” telephone call on Saturday with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkiye, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Pakistan.

He also appreciated the Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir’s role in the process. He noted, “The discussions provided a useful opportunity to exchange views on the current regional situation and how to move the ongoing peace efforts forward to bring lasting peace in the region.”

Meanwhile, Deptuy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said a telephone call led by President Trump with the leaders of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Qatar, Egypt, the UAE and Jordan marked “a significant step closer toward the shared objective of regional peace, stability, and an early diplomatic outcome.”

Dar praised Trump’s leadership alongside his negotiating team, while also expressing appreciation for the “constructive engagement of the Iranian leadership” in advancing the peace process.

He singled out Field Marshal Asim Munir, who he said “played a central role throughout this sensitive and consequential process” and represented Pakistan in Sunday’s discussions, and credited PM Shehbaz for his “visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to peace.”

He also acknowledged regional partners including Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt and Qatar, saying their support had “contributed meaningfully to this final outcome.”

Reaffirming Pakistan’s position, Dar said the country “remains firmly committed to supporting all sincere efforts aimed at lasting peace, mutual respect, and regional stability,” adding that “dialogue and diplomacy must prevail over conflict and confrontation for the collective prosperity and security of our region and beyond.”

Washington and Iran have “largely negotiated” a memorandum of understanding on a peace deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said, as expectations rose that a turning point might be imminent in the three-month-old war.

Various media in the US and Iran said the memorandum that could yield an agreement lays out a phased framework for ending months of fighting, reopening the waterway soon and lifting a US blockade on Iran.

Plans for Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, which Washington has insisted it give up, would be negotiated within 30 to 60 days, the reports said. crisis since the ‌US and Israel launched the war on Iran in February. He did not say what else would be included in an agreement.

PM urges Chinese firms to shift industries to Pakistan under win-win model

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday invited the Chinese companies and entrepreneurs to relocate their industries and businesses to Pakistan, enter into joint ventures with the local firms, and benefit from the country’s investor-friendly policies, describing the initiative as a “win-win model” for both nations.

Addressing the Pakistan-China B2B Investment Conference on IT & Telecom, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and agriculture in Hangzhou, China, the prime minister said that labour in China today had become pretty expensive and that China was obviously moving towards a very high level of industrialisation.

He observed that the industry where China was no longer competitive because of expensive labour could come to Pakistan, bring in plant and machinery, enter into joint ventures with Pakistani entrepreneurs, manufacture goods, and export to third countries.

“This model will be a win-win model for Chinese and Pakistani entrepreneurs, and this will be something of a roaring success in times to come, whether it is textile or leather or other areas,” the prime minister maintained in his speech broadcast on national TV channels.

He also invited Chinese businessmen to come and see the export zone in Karachi, where they would have great opportunities to understand business propositions.

Referring to the potential in mines and minerals, he said that it was also a very important area where Pakistan had large deposits of minerals and gemstones.

About the agriculture sector, he said Pakistan was basically an agrarian economy. Last year, they sent 1,000 boys and girls to China for advanced training, who returned and are doing a great job, but this was just the first step.

The prime minister emphasised that they really needed to move forward and have opportunities to improve their per-acre yield, have the highest quality seeds, best agricultural practices and mechanisation through which they could really advance their agriculture sector by many folds.

He said China imports about 100 billion dollars’ worth of agricultural products from abroad. Pakistan’s share was just a fraction, adding that they needed their cooperation in this regard.

The prime minister hoped that in this manner, they would be able to produce agri products as per their requirement in terms of quality and other controls and if they worked together as iron brothers in this sector, they would be able to not only provide massive job opportunities in the rural areas of Pakistan but also be able to raise hundreds of thousands of small, medium entrepreneurs in the rural areas and have value addition and export those items to China.

In the next five to seven years, he said they expected an increase in their agricultural product trade to China by about 10 $billion, which was not a big task.

PM Shehbaz said IT and AI had huge potential, while special economic zones were also very important and shared that at the port city of Karachi, they had come up with a special economic zone spreading over more than 6,000 acres of land, where all basic amenities would be provided so that Chinese investors and Pakistani entrepreneurs together could invest there.

He said this special economic zone would have modern infrastructure, a seamless business environment and would offer a red-carpet treatment and one-window operation to the Chinese.

“I would like to offer this opportunity to all of you to come forward, and we are going to offer land to you on a long-term basis in terms of lease,” he added.

The prime minister further elaborated that it would be given on long-term lease at very attractive terms and conditions. This world-class special economic zone and the model would be replicated elsewhere in Pakistan through the huge Chinese contribution.

The premier said Pakistan was looking for expertise, experience, investments and not loans, not aid, not handouts, because handouts, aid never made a nation vibrant, never made a nation to stand on its own feet.

PM Shehbaz further said that under President Xi Jinping’s very dynamic leadership, their friendship was deeper than the deepest ocean and higher than the Himalayas, but ever since they had launched their space programme, it had reached to new heights.

The prime minister said that they had signed MoUs worth billions of dollars, starting from Shenzhen and here in Hangzhou, stressing that these MoUs now needed to be converted into agreements.

He also expressed his satisfaction to hear that 30% of these MOUs had been converted into agreements, which most definitely ran into billions of dollars.

The prime minister said Pak-China friendship goes back to the days of the Silk Road.

“Everything is now being operated through digitisation, and China excelled in this field more than any other country in the world, and Pakistan is a great partner because it has a very young population,” he said.

PM Shehbaz said that they had undertaken programmes at the federal and provincial levels, empowering the youth in colleges and schools, giving them training and third-party international certification so that they got very productive employment.

The prime minister further said that it was no coincidence that they were celebrating 75 years of the great friendship between Pakistan and China, and this third B2B event in a row, starting from Shenzhen to Beijing and now here in Hangzhou, was a reflection of the same.

He also appreciated the city’s beauty, its organisation, structure and wonderful management, adding that the city showed beyond any doubt the footprints of President Xi Jinping, who as governor and as secretary general of the city during 2002 to 2007 did a remarkable job to transform this province and this city into one of the fastest-growing cities around the globe.

The prime minister said President Xi Jinping is a visionary leader who has, over the years, made China a world-class economic and military power, second to none and Pakistan, as a true and sincere friend of China, took a lot of pride in this.

Earlier, IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar, Omar Saeed, CEO of Servis Group of Pakistan and Chairman Jin Yongsheng of Long March Tyre, Qian Xiaojun, President of IBI Goulian Gufen also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the major perspectives for joint ventures and cooperation in diverse sectors and shared their experiences.

Later, the prime minister also witnessed the signing of pacts between companies from the two countries.

Pakistan tightens airport screening after WHO declares Ebola emergency

ISLAMABAD: In light of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s) declaration of the Ebola outbreak in Congo and Uganda as a global emergency, Pakistan has intensified screening measures at airports across the country, along with other precautionary steps.

According to the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination on Saturday, Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal directed authorities to implement strict precautionary screening protocols at all airports to prevent the possible spread of the virus.

The ministry said the current Ebola outbreak remains confined to the African countries of Congo and Uganda, citing WHO reports that no cases had been detected outside Africa so far.

Travellers intending to visit African countries have been advised to review relevant travel and health guidelines before departure.

The ministry further stated that no Ebola case had ever been reported in Pakistan or neighbouring countries, adding that Pakistan faced a very low risk due to limited travel links with the affected African states.

However, following WHO directives to strengthen precautionary surveillance, health authorities have stepped up monitoring and preparedness measures nationwide, although no travel restrictions have been recommended.

The health minister said preventive steps were being taken proactively in view of the recent spread of the virus, emphasising that “effective measures are being ensured to protect the public from epidemics.”

The health ministry and the National Institute of Health are continuously monitoring the situation in coordination with the WHO.

Authorities have directed all provinces and border health services to remain vigilant, while the Ministry of Health and its affiliated institutions have been placed on high alert to respond to any emergency situation.

The ministry noted that Pakistan possessed the capacity to diagnose Ebola and said directives had been issued to ensure all necessary arrangements and preparedness measures are in place.

Health authorities are also closely coordinating with the WHO to monitor developments related to the outbreak.

“Delighted to be in beautiful Hangzhou, China with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and members of Pakistan delegation,” Dar said in a statement shared on X.

He said the delegation was looking forward to a series of engagements during the visit, including high-level meetings and participation in the Pakistan-China Business-to-Business Investment Conference scheduled to take place in Hangzhou on May 24.

The foreign minister said the visit carried added importance as Islamabad and Beijing marked a major milestone in bilateral relations.

“The Prime Minister’s visit and our engagements carry special significance as Pakistan and China celebrate 75 years of their ironclad friendship,” he said.

According to the government’s post, while in Hangzhou, PM Shehbaz will meet Party Secretary of Zhejiang Province Wang Hao, participate in a business forum held to promote cooperation between Pakistani and Chinese companies under CPEC Phase-II, and attend the ceremony for the exchange of agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoUs).
