Chinese FM Wang Yi congratulates Dar over peace efforts

Date:

ISLAMABAD: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday felicitated Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Pakistan’s dedicated efforts to promote peace and stability across the region during a telephonic conversation.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on X, the two leaders exchanged views on the recently concluded negotiations between the United States and Iran.

“Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s continued support for Pakistan’s constructive diplomatic role,” read the statement.

Dar reiterated Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to advancing dialogue and diplomacy as the preferred means of restoring peace in the region.

“Emphasising that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path forward, both leaders also discussed the Pakistan–China five-point peace initiative aimed at facilitating the peaceful resolution of issues,” it added.

Earlier today, Dar received Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong, the ministry wrote in a post on X. “Discussions centred on recent developments following the Islamabad talks,” the ministry said.

It added that Dar “reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued resolve to support dialogue and diplomacy,” adding that “Ambassador Jiang commended Pakistan’s important role in facilitating direct talks between the United States and Iran.”

“Both sides reaffirmed the strong Pakistan–China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership,” the ministry concluded.

Separately, Dar also chaired a meeting with Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch and other officers of the foreign ministry, to commend their hard work, commitment, and professionalism during the “Islamabad Talks”.

According to an official statement, Dar “appreciated their contribution in facilitating the dialogue between Iran and the United States,” which the ministry stated was “an important step towards constructive engagement and promoting peace and stability.”

Senior leaders from the United States and Iran arrived in Islamabad on Saturday for high-stakes negotiations that followed a devastating six-week war that left thousands dead and pushed the global economy to the brink of recession.

Dar, in the aftermath of the talks, stressed that the US and Iran should continue to uphold their commitment to the ceasefire as negotiations ended without an agreement. “It is imperative that the parties continue to uphold their commitment to the ceasefire,” Dar said during a presser.

Although no agreement was reached, Pakistan’s role in bringing both the US and Iran to the negotiating table has garnered praise from both countries and beyond.

US Vice President JD Vance, upon his departure from Islamabad, appreciated Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, terming both “incredible hosts.”

Vance added, “whatever shortcomings of the negotiation, it wasn’t because of the Pakistanis who did an amazing job and really tried to help us and the Iranians bridge the gap and get to a deal.”

In the aftermath of the negotiations, US President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social that the meeting took place “through the kind and very competent leadership of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan,” describing them as “extraordinary men”.

The Iranian delegation also extended its appreciation to Pakistan, with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei expressing their gratitude for Pakistan facilitating the talks.
