The death toll in India from the novel coronavirus has climbed to 109, the health ministry announced Monday.

The ministry said out of 4,067 cases, 3,666 are currently active, while 292 people have been discharged from hospitals.

Local media said that 693 fresh cases and 32 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours.

“109 people have died of coronavirus in India, with 32 dying and 693 fresh cases in the last 24 hours alone, the highest so far,” local broadcaster NDTV reported.

As part of measures to curb the spread of the virus, the Indian government imposed a 21-day nationwide lockdown on March 25.

Malls, markets, restaurants, cinema houses and public transport remain shut.

Since appearing in Wuhan, China last December, the novel coronavirus, officially known as COVID-19, has spread to at least 183 countries and regions, according to figures compiled by U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.

The data shows more than 1.2 million cases have been reported worldwide, with the global death toll above 69,000 and over 260,000 recoveries. (Agencies)
