SHANGHAI, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) – Walking into the medical devices and healthcare products exhibition area of the 3rd China International Import Expo (CIIE), visitors can see for themselves the huge progress that has been made in the field of life-saving technologies.

Among the exhibitors is Medtronic, an international company providing medical technology, services and solutions, which unveiled a new-generation oxygenator using their Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) technology at the 3rd CIIE.

The oxygenator, called ECMO Nautilus Smart, boasts an integrated, real-time monitoring function for blood pressure, oxygen saturation and body temperature. The ECMO works to improve the cardio-respiratory recovery time of critical patients, optimizing blood flow, reducing the risk of blood clotting and providing gas exchange for up to 14 days.

Medtronic has attended the CIIE on three occasions. This year, they showcased more than 70 medical achievements in the fields of COVID-19 prevention and control, neurosurgery and spinal surgery, solutions for heart and blood vessel diseases, smart surgery, digestive and liver-disease solutions, intelligent management of diabetes and kidney health.

A two-gram transcatheter pacemaker system, 93 percent smaller than a traditional pacemaker, attracted visitors’ attention during the Expo. The pacemaker contains a sensor that can register the physical contraction of the heart’s atrium and then pace the ventricles appropriately. It simulates the signal transduction of the heart and realizes the synchronization of atrial and ventricular signals.

A previous generation of the new transcatheter pacemaker was introduced in China during the 2nd CIIE in 2019. Since that time, it has been implanted in more than 700 patients, according to Wang Yunhe, a medical engineer at Medtronic. The patients are all in a stable condition.

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, medical treatment has become a hot topic among the general public, said Gu Yushao, senior vice president of Medtronic. The company hopes to make joint efforts with China to explore medical technology development.

The 3rd CIIE has more than 300 companies displaying in the medical devices and healthcare products exhibition area. Global healthcare company Johnson & Johnson has attended the expo for the third consecutive year.

Speaking at a smart healthcare forum at the CIIE, Will Song, Johnson & Johnson’s global senior vice president and the company’s chairman in China, said that China has leading smart medical technology, which includes artificial intelligence, 3D printing, 5G and surgical robots.

He pledged to accelerate local research and development in China. “We think China has a promising sci-tech innovation ecosystem in the healthcare industry,” said Song.

Also at the forum was Zhang Wenhong, head of the Center for Infectious Diseases at the Shanghai-based Huashan Hospital of Fudan University. He said that he hopes the development of smart healthcare technology can benefit everyone and bring treatment to those patients in remote areas. Enditem
