{"id":617,"date":"2026-04-17T18:27:26","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T18:27:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diplomag.com.pk\/?p=617"},"modified":"2026-04-17T18:31:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T18:31:21","slug":"pm-recep-tayyip-erdogan-stress-using-window-of-opportunity-for-lasting-regional-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diplomag.com.pk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/17\/pm-recep-tayyip-erdogan-stress-using-window-of-opportunity-for-lasting-regional-peace\/","title":{"rendered":"PM, Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan stress using \u2018window of opportunity\u2019 for lasting regional peace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>ISLAMABAD<\/strong>: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday emphasised the importance of \u201ceffectively utilising the current window of opportunity to advance durable and lasting regional peace\u201d amid the ongoing war in the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, the Prime Minister\u2019s Office (PMO) said that the premier met Erdogan on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring the warm and cordial meeting, President Erdogan welcomed the Prime Minister to T\u00fcrkiye and thanked him for his participation in the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the PMO, the premier thanked Erdogan for his warm invitation and the traditional Turkish hospitality extended to him and his delegation during his stay in Antalya. He also congratulated the Turkish president on the success of the forum, which he said had transformed into an important global event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe two leaders exchanged views on recent regional developments, particularly the evolving situation in the Middle East. The prime minister thanked President Erdogan for his strong support and encouragement of Pakistan\u2019s peace efforts and shared with him the updates on how to extend the ceasefire and resume talks so that a peace agreement could be reached,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe two leaders emphasised the importance of effectively utilising the current window of opportunity to advance a durable and lasting regional peace,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both leaders also expressed satisfaction at the positive trajectory of bilateral relations and agreed to convene the eighth High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council meeting in Ankara later this year, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoth leaders emphasised the importance of expediting the implementation of ongoing initiatives and exploring new opportunities to further deepen economic engagement,\u201d the PMO said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe meeting concluded with both leaders reaffirming their resolve to further strengthen the strategic partnership between Pakistan and T\u00fcrkiye, building on fraternal ties, and a shared vision for peace and prosperity,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Per the handout, the meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Ataullah Tarar and other senior officials. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and other senior Turkish officials were also present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PM Shehbaz also posted about his meeting with Erdogan on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had a substantive exchange on regional developments, particularly the evolving situation in the Middle East. I deeply appreciate Turkiye\u2019s steadfast support for Pakistan\u2019s peace efforts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe reaffirmed our shared commitment to further strengthen our deep-rooted, brotherly ties and agreed to enhance our strategic partnership, expand economic cooperation, and continue to work together for peace and prosperity in the region and beyond,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PM\u2019s meetings with world leaders<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shehbaz also held informal meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of Antalya Diplomacy Forum, the PMO said. According to the PMO, PM Shehbaz met Erdogan, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also held meetings with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, as well as the former president of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The meetings were held in a \u201ccordial atmosphere\u201d, the PMO said. \u201cRegional and global situations were also discussed during the meetings,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also participated in a trilateral meeting with Erdogan and the Qatari emir on the sidelines of the summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe three leaders exchanged views on recent regional developments and ongoing peace efforts. The worrying situation in Gaza and Palestine was also discussed. They agreed to continue close cooperation to further advance dialogue and diplomacy for lasting regional peace and stability,\u201d the PMO said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately, Senior Adviser to the US President for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos paid a courtesy call to PM Shehbaz, according to the PMO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the meeting, the premier \u201cconveyed his warm regards for US President Donald Trump, while fondly recalling his own warm and cordial interactions with him\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PM Shehbaz expressed \u201cdeep appreciation\u201d for the US president\u2019s \u201cbold and decisive leadership that had led to the ceasefire between Pakistan and India last year, when both countries were on the brink of war\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also commended the president for the ceasefire in Lebanon. PMO added that the two sides \u201cdiscussed current regional developments, including Pakistan\u2019s peace efforts that led to the ceasefire as well as the historic Islamabad Talks\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The premier stressed the significance of strengthening Pakistan-US ties, \u201cespecially economic and trade cooperation, as well as matters of mutual interest in multilateral diplomacy\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the statement, Boulos \u201cconveyed greetings to the prime minister from president Trump and appreciated Pakistan\u2019s constructive contributions to regional stability\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US official also expressed his country\u2019s interest in \u201cdeepening engagement with Pakistan on shared priorities, including counter-terrorism, economic development, and addressing global challenges\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dar\u2019s meetings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dar, who accompanied the premier on his tri-nation trip, met the foreign ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bangladesh, Algeria, Austria, Northern Cyprus and Singapore\u2019s minister of state for trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dar, in his meeting with Austria\u2019s Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger, \u201creaffirmed the positive trajectory of Pakistan\u2013Austria relations\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the meeting, Dar also expressed Pakistan\u2019s \u201ccommitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Austria, Dar wrote on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Austrian FM appreciated Pakistan\u2019s role in the US-Iran negotiations, Dar added. \u201cWe agreed on the importance of continued engagement for regional peace and stability,\u201d Dar said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his meeting with the Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, Dar said the two exchanged views on strengthening bilateral ties and regional developments<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFM Attaf appreciated Pakistan\u2019s role in achieving the initial ceasefire and the continued efforts in promoting dialogue and diplomacy toward lasting peace and stability in the region,\u201d Dar wrote in another post on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding his meeting with the Foreign Minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina Elmedin Konakovi\u0107 on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Dar, in a separate post, said the two reaffirmed the strong historical bonds between the two countries, \u201chaving stood by each other in times of hardship and crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlso exchanged views on the latest regional developments,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dar also met Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on the sidelines of the forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe discussed strengthening Pakistan\u2013Bangladesh ties and exchanged views on regional developments, including Pakistan\u2019s role in facilitating dialogue,\u201d Dar wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI look forward to our continued positive and forward-looking engagement,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, the Foreign Office (FO) said that Dar held a meeting with the Foreign Minister Northern Cyprus Tahsin Ertu\u011frulo\u011flu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the meeting, the two resolved to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly for \u201ceducation and welfare\u201d of the Pakistani diaspora in the country, the FO said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FO added that the two also \u201cagreed to maintain close engagement and continue working together to promote the mutual benefit of their peoples\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a separate post, Dar said he met Singapore\u2019s Minister of State for Trade and Industry Gan Siow Huang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we mark 60 years of Pakistan\u2013Singapore diplomatic relations, we reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthening cooperation across all sectors, including at the multilateral fora,\u201d Dar wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that during the meeting, the two discussed regional developments with Huang expressing \u201cstrong support for and appreciation of Pakistan\u2019s efforts to promote dialogue and diplomacy for peaceful resolution of issues in the region\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A day earlier, after spending the afternoon in Qatar to discuss regional developments with its ruler, PM Shehbaz reached Turkiye to meet Erdogan, where he will apprise the Turkish premier of the peace talks to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East, as well as attend the 5th Antalya Diplomacy Forum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his tri-nation trip, PM Shehbaz left Pakistan on Wednesday for Saudi Arabia, where he met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah, before his departure for Doha, where he met the Qatari ruler to discuss the US-Iran talks, brokered by Islamabad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its earlier statement, the FO said the visits to Saudi Arabia and Qatar were \u201cin the bilateral context\u201d. It added that the premier would meet the leadership there to \u201cdiscuss ongoing bilateral cooperation as well as regional peace and security\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gulf countries \u2014 including Saudi Arabia \u2014 were facing Iranian attacks, which Tehran says were aimed at US and Israeli sites in response to the latter\u2019s deadly large-scale strikes.
