{"id":3980,"date":"2026-11-06T14:33:48","date_gmt":"2026-11-06T14:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diplomag.com.pk\/?p=3980"},"modified":"2026-11-06T14:33:48","modified_gmt":"2026-11-06T14:33:48","slug":"asif-sees-bid-to-pave-way-for-alternative-setup-in-punjab-amid-maryam-salik-rift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diplomag.com.pk\/index.php\/2026\/11\/06\/asif-sees-bid-to-pave-way-for-alternative-setup-in-punjab-amid-maryam-salik-rift\/","title":{"rendered":"Asif sees bid to pave way for alternative setup in Punjab amid Maryam-Salik rift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ISLAMABAD<\/strong>: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has claimed that Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain\u2019s recent corruption allegations against the Punjab government are part of efforts to set the ground for an \u201calternative arrangement\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>His remarks came during <em>ARY News\u2019<\/em> programme \u2018<em>Khabar \u2013 Mohammad Malick Ke Saath!<\/em>\u2019 on Thursday, when he was asked about his earlier statement, wherein he had suggested that Salik\u2019s allegations could be \u201cpart of some future political agenda \u2014 to target Maryam Nawaz\u2019s government and carve out space for himself in Punjab and at the Centre to secure his political future\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He alleged during the <em>ARY News\u2019<\/em> programme that Salik\u2019s allegations \u201care part of setting the stage for some post-period\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis statement was given selectively against Punjab. Corruption is prevalent everywhere in Pakistan. [\u2026] I have tweeted about it many times,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Asif continued: \u201cThere is an attempt to create an alternative arrangement \u2014 to discredit incumbent people so that a fresh team can be presented. Whoever is behind this, that is what I was signalling to. Please do not ask me anything more than this; I can share my personal assessment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also alluded to \u201csome wealthy people\u201d, describing them as \u201ccarpetbaggers\u201d who had been active in this regard for the past six to eight months in anticipation of a \u201cpolitical crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether the \u201calternative arrangement\u201d was specific to Punjab or was applicable nationwide, Asif said: \u201cNo, no. Some people are positioning themselves behind it; it is not something that is happening across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese people believe that the incumbent elsewhere may also become a party to the plan, but explaining it would be premature. [\u2026] This is my assessment for now; in the long run, the plan could be dropped as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asif was also asked whether the \u201cstrong reaction\u201d from the Punjab CM House to Salik\u2019s allegations could be linked to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi\u2019s reported \u201cclose relationship\u201d with the Chaudhry family, given that CM Maryam and Naqvi were \u201cnot known to have the best of relationships\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs this closeness a factor for concern?\u201d the anchorperson asked.<\/p>\n<p>Asif said it could be a factor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not impossible, [\u2026] they are pursuing their own interests.
