{"id":3713,"date":"2026-10-23T01:51:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-23T01:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diplomag.com.pk\/?p=3713"},"modified":"2026-10-23T01:51:00","modified_gmt":"2026-10-23T01:51:00","slug":"ji-govt-to-discuss-shehbaz-naeem-meeting-plan-on-friday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diplomag.com.pk\/index.php\/2026\/10\/23\/ji-govt-to-discuss-shehbaz-naeem-meeting-plan-on-friday\/","title":{"rendered":"JI, govt to discuss Shehbaz\u2013Naeem meeting plan on Friday"},"content":{"rendered":"<article id=\"2039015\" class=\"story relative overflow-hidden single    bg-white font-georgia overflow-visible\" data-id=\"2039015\" data-layout=\"default\" data-tags=\"\">\n<div class=\"template__main  flow-root  px-1 w-full sm:w-2\/3 mx-auto md:min-w-183\">\n<div class=\"story__content  flow-root    pt-1 mt-1 text-4 sm:text-4.5  overflow-visible\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p><strong>ISLAMABAD<\/strong>: Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has said it will hold talks with the government on Friday regarding its demand to abolish the petroleum levy and on further high-level contacts between them.<\/p>\n<p>The committee-level talks were fixed following a telephonic conversation between JI Vice Emir Liaqat Baloch and Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, according to a press release issued by JI on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The JI has been demanding for over two months that the Centre abolish the levies \u2014 Rs114 per litre on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel \u2014 as the total prices have skyrocketed due to conflicts in the Middle East since March.<\/p>\n<p>Friday\u2019s talks between the two sides\u2019 negotiating committees will take place at Punjab House in Islamabad, where they will also work out a schedule for a proposed meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, the party said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, despite the planned talks, Baloch reiterated his party\u2019s call for countrywide protests tomorrow (Friday).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJI will hold peaceful protests at district headquarters across the country on Friday to demand the abolition of unjust petroleum levy,\u201d Baloch was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>The party would continue its protests alongside negotiations with the government, he declared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe campaign is not about the party\u2019s interests but aimed to secure public relief, reduce unbearable production costs and revive economic activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The party vice chair also called a meeting of the JI negotiating committee in Islamabad ahead of the talks.<\/p>\n<p>According to the JI statement, Iqbal, who heads the government\u2019s negotiating committee, informed Baloch that the meeting had initially been planned for Tuesday or Wednesday but was postponed because of the government\u2019s \u201curgent engagements\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Baloch, in the press release, argued that reducing the burden of petroleum levies and payments to independent power producers (IPPs) was essential to easing pressure on households, agriculture, industry, trade and small businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch measures could help revive economic activity and create employment opportunities,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n<p>The JI leader claimed governments were often reluctant to give up unjust taxes and rarely acknowledged the role of protest movements in securing public relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrevious relief measures were announced under pressure from public sit-ins and had been implemented through flawed methods that failed to produce a positive impact on the national economy,\u201d Baloch said as per the press release.<\/p>\n<p>He also called on the government and other institutions to acknowledge their mistakes and avoid constitutional measures that could deepen the political crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The JI leader urged all stakeholders to engage in a national dialogue and agree on priorities to steer the country out of its political and economic difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJI\u2019s negotiating committee has already identified possible options and available fiscal space within the constraints imposed by the IMF programme and the national budget,\u201d Baloch was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government and the prime minister\u2019s team must now demonstrate the political will to provide relief to the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the government failed to meet the party\u2019s demand, JI will proceed with its planned long march from Multan,\u201d he warned, referring to the protest that it had launched towards Islamabad but postponed at PM Shehbaz\u2019s request.<\/p>\n<p>On Aug 16, the JI announced sit-ins in all the provincial capitals of Pakistan against the petroleum levy and had called for a nationwide strike on Sept 3.
