{"id":3700,"date":"2026-10-22T08:44:59","date_gmt":"2026-10-22T08:44:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diplomag.com.pk\/?p=3700"},"modified":"2026-10-22T08:44:59","modified_gmt":"2026-10-22T08:44:59","slug":"shehbaz-chairs-peshawar-meeting-to-review-kp-security-situation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diplomag.com.pk\/index.php\/2026\/10\/22\/shehbaz-chairs-peshawar-meeting-to-review-kp-security-situation\/","title":{"rendered":"Shehbaz chairs Peshawar meeting to review KP security situation"},"content":{"rendered":"<article id=\"2038980\" class=\"story relative overflow-hidden single    bg-white font-georgia overflow-visible\" data-id=\"2038980\" data-layout=\"default\" data-tags=\"\">\n<div class=\"template__main  flow-root  px-1 w-full sm:w-2\/3 mx-auto md:min-w-183\">\n<div class=\"story__content  flow-root    pt-1 mt-1 text-4 sm:text-4.5  overflow-visible\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p><strong>PESHAWAR<\/strong>: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is chairing a meeting of the apex committee to review the overall security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, state media reported on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The premier reached Peshawar earlier in the day in his first visit to the province since governor\u2019s rule and emergency on October 11, according to sources in the Prime Minister\u2019s Office (PMO).<\/p>\n<p>The Centre imposed emergency and governor\u2019s rule in KP on October 11, citing the PTI-led provincial government\u2019s \u201cdeliberate disengagement\u201d from the fight against terrorism. The decisions were also endorsed by the Parliament last week amid protests by the opposition.<\/p>\n<p>State-run <em>Radio Pakistan,<\/em> citing sources, reported that the meeting was being attended by KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi as well as federal and provincial ministers.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  w-full  w-full  media--  media--embed  media--uneven media--tweet\" data-original-src=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RadioPakistan\/status\/2113182686231896186\">\n<div class=\"media__item  media__item--twitter  \"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Senior military leadership is also participating in the apex committee meeting, it added.<\/p>\n<p>It was further reported that the meeting will review the overall security situation in KP and measures being taken to combat terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Kundi, along with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, chaired a meeting of the apex committee a day after governor\u2019s rule was imposed.<\/p>\n<p>In the meeting, the governor \u2014 who is now in charge of running the province \u2014 assured Naqvi he would enforce all policies of the federal government and work together with the security forces for peace and prosperity of the province.<\/p>\n<p>Kundi asserted that under the new set-up, tackling terrorism would be the priority.<\/p>\n<p>Later that day, Kundi, addressing a press conference, called for greater coordination between the Centre and the province, stressing that policies on counterterrorism will \u201ccome from Islamabad [..] not Kabul,\u201d in an apparent jibe at the PTI-led KP government, which has been accused of maintaining a \u201cnexus\u201d with terrorist groups by federal ministers.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre\u2019s move to impose governor\u2019s rule and emergency in KP also followed a mobilisation drive and protest march by the PTI and in opposition at the Centre, to demand the release of its jailed founder, Imran Khan.<\/p>\n<p>Intense negotiations between the two sides a week before the imposition of governor\u2019s rule had failed to yield any results, with counterterrorism policy being one of the main reasons behind the breakdown of their talks.<\/p>\n<p>The PTI said it was being left out of security decisions concerning KP, which the Centre denied.
