ISLAMABAD<\/strong>: Pakistan on Friday strongly condemned an attack by the Houthi militia on the Taibah power distribution station in Madina on Sept 29, describing it as a \u201cgrave provocation\u201d and a threat to regional peace and security.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the Foreign Office (FO) said the attack targeted civilian infrastructure supplying electricity to the Holy Prophet\u2019s (PBUH) Mosque.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques and the safety of worshippers and pilgrims must be respected under all circumstances,\u201d the FO said.<\/p>\n

It called for an \u201cimmediate and unconditional\u201d end to what it described as \u201creckless actions\u201d, saying such attacks also constituted a grave threat to regional peace and security.<\/p>\n

The FO reaffirmed Pakistan\u2019s \u201cunwavering solidarity\u201d with Saudi Arabia and expressed full support for the kingdom\u2019s sovereignty, territorial integrity and security.<\/p>\n

\u201cPakistan stands firmly with Saudi Arabia in its efforts to safeguard the Two Holy Mosques, protect its people and ensure the safety of pilgrims,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

The FO added that Pakistan had been and would continue to make efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.<\/p>\n

The statement comes as Yemen\u2019s Saudi-led coalition accused the group of striking an electricity distribution station in Madina, which provided power to the Prophet\u2019s (PBUH) Mosque. However, the Houthis have denied the accusation.<\/p>\n

The attack came as fighting intensifies in Yemen, where government forces said they carried out attacks on the militia\u2019s targets.<\/p>\n

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki al-Maliki said a drone struck the Taibah electricity distribution station at 5:11 am (07:11am PKT) on September 29.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe investigation and evidence gathered by the competent authorities have confirmed the involvement of the terrorist Houthi militia in planning and executing this cowardly terrorist act, based on after-action review and the wreckage of the drone used,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The coalition said one transformer was taken out of service without affecting the wider electricity network.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia said earlier in September that it had intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Makkah before it entered restricted airspace over the city. The coalition described that incident as the second Houthi attempt to target Makkah since 2017, while the Houthis denied targeting Makkah or any other Islamic holy site.<\/p>\n

The latest escalation is the most serious fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis since a UN-brokered truce largely halted cross-border attacks in 2022. Hostilities resumed this year after the Houthis declared a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia in July and began attacking Saudi territory and shipping, while Houthi forces also made major territorial gains along Yemen\u2019s Red Sea coast.<\/p>\n

Saudi Arabia has responded with airstrikes in Yemen and backed government forces fighting to push back the Houthis.<\/p>\n

Against this backdrop, Pakistan, which has signed two defence agreements with Riyadh, has repeatedly expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n

The first one, the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement (SMDA), was signed in Sept 2025, under which the two countries pledged that any attack on either nation would be treated as an act of aggression against both.<\/p>\n

The two countries are also parties to the Makkah Defence Alliance, which also includes Turkiye. The pact was signed on August 7 and provides that an attack on one member state would be treated as an attack on all.<\/p>\n

The military leadership of the three countries also held a meeting in Riyadh last month. During the meeting, the military leaders expressed a shared determination to \u201cimmediately translate\u201d their commitments under the Makkah Defence Alliance into effective military cooperation.<\/p>\n

On September 30, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said that Pakistan was \u201cthere to help\u201d Saudi Arabia in any conflict.<\/p>\n

\u2018Provocative attacks\u2019<\/h2>\n

The incident has drawn harsh criticism from Muslim countries.<\/p>\n

Turkiye strongly condemned the alleged attack and voiced support for Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe strongly condemn the Houthis\u2019 attack on civilian infrastructure\u201d in Madina, the foreign ministry said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese provocative attacks, which threaten Saudi Arabia\u2019s sovereignty and security and target the sacred values of the Islamic world, must cease immediately and unconditionally.\u201d<\/p>\n

Turkiye said it reiterated its \u201cstrong support for Saudi Arabia\u201d and called for steps to prevent further escalation.<\/p>\n

Qatar also condemned the attack. In a statement, Doha said it was \u201ca grave assault on the sanctity of Islamic holy sites\u201d, a violation of Saudi sovereignty and international law.<\/p>\n

It reaffirmed its \u201cfull solidarity\u201d with Riyadh and said the kingdom\u2019s security was an integral part of Gulf security.<\/p>\n

The League of Arab States joined the chorus, calling the attack \u201can unacceptable transgression\u201d. The organisation said the attack \u201cprovokes the sentiments of Muslims worldwide\u201d and represented a dangerous escalation.<\/p>\n

Al-Azhar, the Cairo-based institute of Sunni Islamic learning, also denounced the incident.<\/p>\n
