ISLAMABAD<\/strong>: Seven former Australia cricket captains have written to the country\u2019\u2018s foreign minister, Penny Wong, to raise concerns over PTI founder Imran Khan\u2019s incarceration, terming it a matter of \u201cbasic humanity\u201d, Cricinfo<\/em>\u00a0reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Imran, 73, has been imprisoned since 2023 and was sentenced late last year along with his wife to 17 years on corruption charges they both deny.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Cricinfo<\/em>, the signatories of the letter include Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor and Steve Waugh.<\/p>\n

In the letter, they said they were writing \u201cnot as diplomats or political figures, but as former captains who felt compelled to speak up\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe group makes clear it takes no position\u201d on the legal or political case against Imran, describing that as a matter for Pakistan alone, the report said.<\/p>\n

Their concern, they wrote, was with the treatment of any person in detention, calling it \u201ca matter of basic humanity, whatever their politics\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the\u00a0Sydney Morning Herald<\/em>, a spokesperson for Wong said that Australia \u201cregularly raises\u201d Imran\u2019s case in discussions with Pakistan.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe continue to encourage authorities to ensure appropriate medical care is available to him,\u201d the spokesperson was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n

Last month, 22 international cricketers \u2014 including the Chappell brothers, Border, Waugh, Clark and Hughes \u2014 had penned an\u00a0appeal\u00a0to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, calling for Imran\u2019s medical treatment in line with Supreme Court directives.<\/p>\n

On August 18, the Supreme Court\u00a0directed\u00a0the government to move Imran to Islamabad\u2019s Shifa International Hospital, a private facility, within two days for examination and treatment by a multidisciplinary medical board. However, it later emerged that Imran was instead taken to the government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences.<\/p>\n

In February, Indian cricket greats Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev had\u00a0joined\u00a0a dozen other former international captains, including the Chappell brothers, Border, Waugh, Clark and Hughes, in demanding better prison treatment for Imran, who they called \u201cone of the finest all-rounders\u201d of the game.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the government has\u00a0stated\u00a0that Imran\u2019s imprisonment is \u201cgoverned by the Pakistan Prison Rules, applicable judicial directions and security arrangements appropriate to a high-profile prisoner\u201d.
