KARACHI<\/strong>: Some family members of Pakistani sailors, who have been held hostage by Somali pirates aboard the MT Honour 25 for more than four months, were briefly detained on Monday morning while they were staging a sit-in at Karachi\u2019s Sharea Faisal.<\/p>\n

The MT Honour 25, a Palau-flagged oil tanker, was\u00a0hijacked\u00a0by armed pirates off the coast of Puntland, Somalia, on April 21. Besides 10 crew members from Pakistan, the hostages include seamen from Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

During more than four months of their captivity,\u00a0no significant progress\u00a0has been reported either in negotiations or in the payment of the ransom, said to be around $3 million, for their recovery.<\/p>\n

Their families have\u00a0staged protests\u00a0for their recovery multiple times.<\/p>\n

On Sunday, they began an overnight sit-in at Sharea Faisal outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs\u2019 (Mofa) liaison office and planned to march to the Supreme Court registry on Monday morning. But police reached the protest site before that and detained some of them.<\/p>\n

They were later released, the wife of one of the hostages confirmed it in the afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were taken to the police station and kept there for a long time, and the police were not allowing us to see them. The police misbehaved with us and told us to go away,\u201d said Ayesha Ameen, whose husband, Ameen Bin Shams, was a fitter on the hijacked ship.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were arrested around 7:45am,\u201d added Ayesha, who was not detained by police.<\/p>\n

She said that the protesters were taken to the Tipu Sultan police station and alleged that 11 protesters were detained, including \u201cunderage individuals\u201d.<\/p>\n

A police official, who requested anonymity, also confirmed that the detained individuals had been released.<\/p>\n

A senior police officer, who wished not to be named, denied that any protester was arrested. He said if there had been an arrest, it would have been mentioned in the police\u2019s\u00a0roznamcha<\/em>\u00a0(logbook).<\/p>\n

Instead, the officer asserted that the police had engaged the protestors since Sunday night.<\/p>\n

He said police officers had tried to persuade the families to vacate the place when they gathered at the Mofa office and asked them to hold their protest at a designated venue such as Karachi Press Club.<\/p>\n

The officer told that the police dispersed the protesters without using any force. He also denied resorting to baton charges against the demonstrators.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Ayesha recorded a video message at the protest site and said the families had been demanding the recovery of the hostages for four and a half months; however, \u201cno one is listening to us\u201d.<\/p>\n

She added that the protesters were not blocking any roads or engaged in illegal activity but were merely protesting peacefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe came here for the hostages\u2019 release, not to become prisoners ourselves,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Another protester recorded a video inside a vehicle that appeared to be a police van. Police personnel could be seen standing outside the van in the video, in which Talib Raza, the maternal uncle of a second engineer on the ship, decried the detention of the protesters.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been arrested \u2014 our women, elders and kids. It is shameful.<\/p>\n

\u201cBilawal Bhutto sahib, we did not expect this from you,\u201d Raza said, expressing disappointment.<\/p>\n

In another video, a woman was also seen inside a vehicle that appeared to be a police van. Meanwhile, another woman could be heard saying, \u201cLook, we are being arrested. This is our government, and this is our police. We are being taken away only because we spoke up for ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a video shared by Ayesha, two police officials could be seen manhandling an individual and forcing him into the police mobile.<\/p>\n

Distress messages<\/h2>\n

Since the sailors\u2019 hijacking, the crew has also made several emotional videos and audio\u00a0appeals, while reporting that they have run out of clean water, food and medicine.<\/p>\n

The last\u00a0message\u00a0from them came on August 7, more than 100 days after being taken hostage by Somali pirates. In that video, they appealed directly to the Pakistani government for their release.<\/p>\n

They appeared to be in a state of extreme distress, with most looking sick and weak. The hostages requested that the Pakistani government talk to the Somali pirates and take steps to release them.<\/p>\n

The hostages are victims of an \u201cownership crisis\u201d because it is not clear who owns the ship, and the man previously thought to be the owner was later revealed to be more likely a middleman who hired them.<\/p>\n

Last month, in a\u00a0meeting\u00a0with the International Maritime Organisation\u2019s head, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar pressed for \u201curgent and effective institutional intervention\u201d for the return of the Pakistani sailors.<\/p>\n

Earlier that month, he had also directed \u201cstakeholders\u201d to\u00a0intensify\u00a0diplomatic engagement with national and international partners to facilitate the release.<\/p>\n

The Foreign Office has also maintained that it remains\u00a0\u201cactively engaged\u201d\u00a0to secure the release of the seamen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
