{"id":2805,"date":"2026-08-23T17:21:27","date_gmt":"2026-08-23T17:21:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diplomag.com.pk\/?p=2805"},"modified":"2026-08-23T17:21:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-23T17:21:27","slug":"cricket-greats-appeal-to-pm-shehbaz-for-imrans-treatment-in-line-with-sc-directives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diplomag.com.pk\/index.php\/2026\/08\/23\/cricket-greats-appeal-to-pm-shehbaz-for-imrans-treatment-in-line-with-sc-directives\/","title":{"rendered":"Cricket greats appeal to PM Shehbaz for Imran&#8217;s treatment in line with SC directives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ISLAMABAD<\/strong>: Twenty-two international cricketers, including 21 ex-captains, have written a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, making an appeal for ex-Pakistani premier Imran Khan\u2019s medical treatment in line with recent Supreme Court directives, <em>ESPN Cricinfo<\/em>\u00a0reported on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>On August 18, the Supreme Court directed the government to move Imran to Islamabad\u2019s Shifa International Hospital, a private facility, within two days for examination and treatment by a multidisciplinary medical board.<\/p>\n<p>However, it later turned out that Imran was instead taken to the government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, it was also reported that he could not undergo a recommended computed tomography angiography (CTA) at Pims as the required facilities were unavailable at the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The letter written by the 22 ex-cricketers and cited by\u00a0<em>ESPN Cricinfo<\/em>\u00a0stated: \u201cPakistan\u2019s Supreme Court ordered that Imran Khan be transferred to hospital for examination by a medical board that was to include his own personal physicians and his sister, Dr Uzma Khan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe court also reinstated weekly family visits. These were very welcome steps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the former cricketers noted, Imran\u2019s hospital stay lasted only a few hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was examined by a state-appointed team rather than the board the court had directed, declared \u2018medically fit\u2019, and returned to Adiala Jail before that board could complete its work,\u201d the letter claimed, according to\u00a0<em>ESPN<\/em>\u00a0Cricinfo.<\/p>\n<p>The former cricketers called for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Permitting the medical board directed by the Supreme Court \u2014 including Imran\u2019s own doctors \u2014 to complete a full and independent assessment of his health, particularly the reported loss of vision in his right eye.<\/li>\n<li>Honouring the weekly family visits reinstated by the court without interruption or administrative delay<\/li>\n<li>Providing the recommended treatment to Imran without delay following the outcome of his medical assessment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The letter\u2019s signatories included Michael Atherton, Alex Blackwell, Allan Border, Michael Brearley, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Alastair Cook, Michael Gatting, Sunil Gavaskar, Lee Germon, Adam Gilchrist, David Gower, Kim Hughes, Nasser Hussain, Clive Lloyd, Kapil Dev, Arjuna Ranatunga, Andrew Strauss, Dilip Vengsarkar, Steve Waugh and John Wright.<\/p>\n<p>In their appeal, they said they were writing \u201cnot as politicians, but as former colleagues and rivals who share a bond forged on the cricket field\u201c and that they did not seek to adjudicate Pakistan\u2019s domestic legal processes.<\/p>\n<p>Several of these cricketers had\u00a0called on\u00a0the authorities in February as well, expressing \u201cdeep concern\u201d about Imran\u2019s treatment and prison conditions. The cricket greats had urged the Pakistan government to ensure immediate and adequate medical attention, dignified treatment, and unhindered access to legal processes for Imran.<\/p>\n<p>Imran has been in jail since August 2023, convicted in a string of cases that he says were politically driven following his\u00a0ouster\u00a0in a 2022 parliamentary vote.<\/p>\n<p>There has been much ado over his health in recent months, with him having been taken to the hospital multiple times for an\u00a0eye ailment\u00a0\u2014 right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) \u2014 that\u00a0came to light\u00a0in late January.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, his party, the PTI, and the government have been engaged in a\u00a0blame game, with the former\u00a0accusing\u00a0the latter of a lack of transparency in not ensuring appropriate treatment for Imran.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD: Twenty-two international cricketers, including 21 ex-captains, have written a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, making an appeal for ex-Pakistani premier Imran Khan\u2019s medical treatment in line with recent Supreme Court directives, ESPN Cricinfo\u00a0reported on Sunday.
