ISLAMABAD<\/strong>: PML-N supremo and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif said on Saturday that while political differences between opponents were common during elections, they should never turn into animosity, apparently referring to the deepening differences between the ruling party and its coalition partner, the PPP, at the Centre.<\/p>\n

Elections are being held across AJK in three phases amid\u00a0tensions\u00a0between protesters and the authorities that have been ongoing for over two months.<\/p>\n

Addressing a party convention in Murree, the party president congratulated the winners of the elections in AJK, while extending commiserations to the losing candidates. However, he noted that the complaints from the PPP have been \u201cupsetting\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have always maintained good relations with our opponents. There is always disagreement in politics, but it should not reach the point where it creates animosity,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The PML-N supremo noted that AJK\u2019s atmosphere has always been good, but lamented seeing the buildup of enmity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was upset over their losses, and I have good relations with them personally,\u201d Nawaz said. \u201cWe need to look at those factors that contributed to their defeat. We had very good candidates who bravely contested these elections. If they were defeated, we must look at the reasons why.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted, \u201cWe can lose seats, but we cannot lose our spirit\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod has granted us victory in these conditions. As you know, there have been three phases in these elections; the third phase has yet to conclude. But God granted us a majority in the first two phases. We cannot thank Him enough,\u201d Nawaz added, warning that there is \u201cno room\u201d for hurting public sentiment.<\/p>\n

The PML-N supremo opined that this is the first time that such an environment was created in AJK. He attributed it to successive governments failing to fulfil their duties and meet the needs and requests of the people, regardless of which ever party was in power.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe absolutely need to enable progress in AJK, whatever way we can. We need to resolve problems there, and we will do what we\u2019ve done in Punjab there,\u201d Nawaz stressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should be our duty, and we need to fulfil public sentiment. If, God forbid, we fail to deliver, the people of AJK will grow angry, and the reason behind it is valid. We would then need to look inward.\u201d<\/p>\n

The PML-N supremo noted that the region needs a great deal of development and tasked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to provide AJK with as much funding as possible to build roads, hospitals, and ensure people have livelihoods.<\/p>\n

\u201cTourism needs to be promoted, and industry must be established. Agriculture requires our full attention, and [we can provide] agricultural loans like those in Punjab,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Moreover, he said that people in Punjab are receiving loans for their houses and expressed his intention to launch such schemes in AJK.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will absolutely direct Shehbaz\u00a0sahib<\/em>\u00a0to launch these schemes in this region, and besides that, provide funding,\u201d Nawaz declared.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople [need to] feel that they are being granted their rights. The people of AJK look at Punjab\u2019s roads, hospitals and hope they are built in AJK; AJK\u2019s children want laptops in their hands, and people should receive Kisaan cards and livelihoods.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nawaz further said that the rest of Pakistan was moving forward and was different from the past, while hailing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif\u2019s efforts and vowing that the current problems would be resolved very soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cPunjab is changing, and AJK should be changed in the same way,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n

PPP should \u2018consider the logic\u2019 of claiming polls were rigged: CM Maryam<\/h2>\n

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif spoke about the PPP\u2019s allegations of electoral rigging in the AJK polls, saying that it should \u201cconsider the logic\u201d of making such claims.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is upsetting that they (PPP) made false allegations of rigging against the PML-N. When they won in Gilgit-Baltistan, they made no claims of rigging; where they lost, they made these allegations,\u201d she told the party conference.<\/p>\n

She added that the PPP could not promise the people of AJK new roads and a clean atmosphere, as they were unable to provide those to the people of Sindh.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn making these allegations, they forgot that the government, administration, president, prime minister and staff were theirs. They should consider logic when levelling allegations against others,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

The polls and allegations of rigging<\/h2>\n

The polls are being held in phases amid unrest in the region.<\/p>\n

The PML-N bagged 24 seats \u2014 nine from Mirpur division in the first phase on\u00a0July 27\u00a0and 15 in the second phase on\u00a0Aug 2,\u00a0comprising Muzaffarabad Division and the 12 refugee seats. The PPP, on the other hand, won only 10 constituencies during these phases.<\/p>\n

The third phase, held on Monday, was originally meant to cover all of Poonch Division, which comprises 11 constituencies, including three in Bagh, one in Haveli, five in Poonch district and two in Sudhnoti district.<\/p>\n

However, the AJK Election Commission announced that polling would only go ahead as scheduled in Bagh and Haveli because of concerns over the law and order situation.<\/p>\n

Elections in 23 polling stations of the two constituencies, which had been postponed earlier, were held today.<\/p>\n

The PPP has criticised the conduct of the AJK elections, with a high-level meeting of the party in Islamabad terming the polls \u201crigged and violent\u201d and expressing serious concern over the role of the AJK Election Commission.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, a\u00a0meeting\u00a0chaired by PPP Women\u2019s Wing president and AJK affairs in-charge Faryal Talpur, also criticised the phase-wise conduct of the elections and demanded the immediate completion of polling in the remaining two districts of the third phase and seven constituencies of Poonch so that the Legislative Assembly could be fully constituted.<\/p>\n

The participants raised questions over the suspension of internet services, shortages of polling material and staff at some polling stations, and alleged inadequate security arrangements.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
