ISLAMABAD<\/strong>: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday inaugurated the country\u2019s \u201clargest\u201d data centre and Sky47 AI cloud in Islamabad, terming the facility \u201cawe-inspiring\u201d.<\/p>\n

The project has a capacity of 8.5 megawatts, the PM noted in his speech. Sky47 is also developing a 5MW data centre at Karachi\u2019s Port Qasim, slated for completion in September.<\/p>\n

Speaking on the occasion, PM Shehbaz said it was a privilege and an honour to be part of the ceremony.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe facility we have just visited is awe-inspiring,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He further said the data centre was built in record time, showcasing the best minds from across Pakistan in both the military and civilian sectors.<\/p>\n

He commended the leadership of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir, under whose supervision the data centre was built.<\/p>\n

PM Shehbaz said he was hopeful that \u201cif we follow this model, there is no reason \u2014 and I am absolutely convinced, more than ever before \u2014 that not only will we be able to make up for the losses of the past, but we will also create a new, dynamic and forward-looking Pakistan, which is the need of the hour.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the task might be difficult, but it was not impossible.<\/p>\n

The premier also invoked the example of Marka-i-Haq, which he called the \u201cfinest moment in Pakistan\u2019s history\u201d. He said such events showed that \u201cif there is a will, there is a way\u201d.<\/p>\n

Despite the challenges and difficulties, one must have the \u201cwill to negotiate\u201d and \u201cthe ardent hope and the energy to turn that into a great opportunity\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

Characterising the data centre as \u201cthe future of Pakistan\u201d, PM Shehbaz also commended the leadership of the minister and secretary for IT.<\/p>\n

Similar data centres will also be built in Karachi and Lahore, the PM said.<\/p>\n

He added that all state organs should immediately align with the facility, which he called a \u201cwonderful gift to the people of Pakistan\u201d.<\/p>\n

The data centre \u201coffers impregnable security and\u2026 gives us this hope and encouragement that everything is doable provided we put our act together\u201d, the premier said.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Centre to provide valuable infrastructure, IT minister says<\/h2>\n

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja termed the data centre \u201ca step in the right direction\u201d, saying that it provided Pakistan with the foundation of an infrastructure \u201ccapable of producing the most important economic unit today: token intelligence\u201d.<\/p>\n

She stated that every opportunity in the future would be reliant on access to high performance computing \u2014 including in healthcare, agriculture, economy, financial services, education, public administration and national security.<\/p>\n

The minister noted that according to McKinsey, the global demand for data centres would triple by 2030, while according to Goldman Sachs, power requirements would also rise by 160 per cent by the same year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is where Pakistan\u2019s opportunity is extraordinary,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re a young nation, we\u2019re a large nation, and we\u2019re a nation of stunning human capability.\u201d<\/p>\n

She highlighted that the country\u2019s engineers, developers, researchers and entrepreneurs did not lack intelligence or ambition, but rather infrastructure \u2014 which the new data centre would provide.<\/p>\n

From infrastructure, she traced a path through model development, orchestration and application to the marketplace, where AI capability could be provided \u201cas a service\u201d and thereby fulfilling national requirements.<\/p>\n

Khawaja also noted PM Shehbaz\u2019s efforts in the last two years under his \u201cDigital Nation Pakistan\u201d vision, including the 5G spectrum auction earlier this year, doubling of undersea fibre capability, right of way reforms for broadband access, AI skills initiatives and a network of AI startups supported by national incubation centres across Pakistan.<\/p>\n

Pakistan\u2019s first-ever locally hosted AI data centre and sovereign AI cloud was\u00a0launched\u00a0by Telenor in partnership with Data Vault in November 2025.<\/p>\n

Last month, Quantum Global Data Centre (QGDC), a venture of the Gul Ahmed Energy Group,\u00a0announced\u00a0plans to develop Pakistan\u2019s largest Tier III data centre, which is expected to become operational in 2027 with an initial investment of $230 million. QGDC signed a strategic partnership agreement with Huawei Pakistan to develop the facility and a science and technology park to support Pakistan\u2019s digital transformation.<\/p>\n

The push towards AI has been prominent on the governmental level recently as departments like the Federal Board of Revenue have\u00a0launched AI-based internal systems\u00a0to enhance transparency, reduce human intervention and improve tax collection efficiency.<\/p>\n

In February 2025, a data centre was\u00a0inaugurated\u00a0at the NED University of Engineering and Technology. The facility, according to university officials, was the country\u2019s first \u201ctier-3 certified data centre\u201d aimed at providing best IT services to the public and the private sector.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
