ISLAMABAD<\/strong>: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Thursday appreciated Pakistan\u2019s efforts for promoting peace during a meeting with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.<\/p>\n

The meeting between the two came on the sidelines of the fifth United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS 2026) at the UN headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n

According to state-run\u00a0PTV News<\/em>, the two exchanged views on the regional situation and broader international developments, including Pakistan\u2019s\u00a0mediation efforts\u00a0between the United States and Iran and its longstanding role in promoting peace.<\/p>\n

It added that the UN chief commended Pakistan\u2019s efforts for peace.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Naqvi had met with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Alexandrovich Kolokoltsev, on the sidelines of the summit.<\/p>\n

The two interior ministers discussed the regional security situation and ways to enhance cooperation in counterterrorism, counter-narcotics, cybercrime and law-enforcement training, the interior ministry said.<\/p>\n

They also discussed conducting joint police exercises and developing coordinated approaches against terrorist networks operating in the region, particularly in Afghanistan, it added.<\/p>\n

Both sides agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between their respective ministries to further institutionalise bilateral cooperation. The meeting also reviewed progress on decisions taken during their\u00a0previous talks, while Naqvi invited his Russian counterpart to visit Pakistan, it added.<\/p>\n

During the meeting, Naqvi said more than 25 terrorist organisations were active in Afghanistan and stressed that eliminating extremist groups was a collective responsibility requiring coordinated efforts.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Naqvi had\u00a0met\u00a0Chinese Minister of State for Public Security and Head of the Special Service Bureau Ling Zhifeng.<\/p>\n

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security cooperation, including counterterrorism, border management, combating irregular migration and counter-narcotics efforts.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Naqvi calls for greater cooperation to tackle transnational threats<\/h2>\n

Meanwhile, addressing the UN Chiefs of Police Summit, Naqvi called for greater international cooperation to tackle transnational security threats, saying that \u201cthe world faces common security challenges\u201d that \u201cdo not stop at national borders.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTerrorism, organised crime, cybercrime, drug trafficking, human smuggling, and money laundering,\u201d he said, listing the challenges confronting countries around the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese threats affect all of us. No country is safe from them. And no country can deal with them alone,\u201d Naqvi said.<\/p>\n

He said international cooperation was \u201cmore important today than ever before\u201d and urged countries to strengthen coordination among their law-enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must work together. We must trust each other. We must share information quickly. We must support one another. And we must build stronger partnerships between our law enforcement agencies,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Naqvi also highlighted the need for police forces to adapt to technological changes, warning that criminals were using new technologies to commit crimes.<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnology is changing very fast. Criminals are using new technology to commit crimes,\u201d he said. \u201cSo we must also use modern technology to prevent them.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cWe must improve the skills of our police officers. We must strengthen training. And we must make greater use of innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Concluding his address, Naqvi thanked the UN for the platform and appealed to the participants: \u201cLet us share ideas that have worked, learn from each other\u2019s success and find new ways to work together.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that the UN had brought the participants together with one common purpose: \u201cTo make our countries safer, to protect our people and to strengthen peace and security\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
