BEIJING: China’s domestically developed “Linghang,” the world’s largest-diameter high-speed-rail shield tunneling machine, has successfully completed the 11,180-meter underwater section of the Yangtze River crossing and made landfall in Taicang, East China’s Jiangsu Province, according to People’s Daily on Sunday.

Since April 29, 2024, the “Linghang” has completed 23 months of safe tunneling, crossed the southern embankment of the Yangtze River and successfully reached Taicang, marking a major step toward its precise arrival at Shaft No. 2 maintenance station.

With a total length of 14,250 meters, the ChongmingTaicang Yangtze River Tunnel is the world’s longest high-speed rail shield tunnel in terms of single-head tunneling distance at 11,325 meters. It also has the largest cutterhead diameter, the highest operating speed for an underwater river-crossing high-speed rail tunnel, and the deepest section beneath the Yangtze River.

It is currently China’s highest-standard, longest-distance, and largest-scale world-class high-speed-rail river-crossing tunnel, according to the report. Once completed and put into operation, the tunnel will enable high-speed trains to cross the Yangtze River without reducing speed.

The “Linghang,” deployed for the tunnel’s construction, is about 148 meters long and weighs about 4,000 tons. It is equipped with the world’s most advanced intelligent control system, the I-TBM system. Tasked with a single-head boring distance of 11,325 meters, the machine has set a global record as the first 15-meter-class large-diameter tunnel boring machine in the world to achieve one-time continuous boring of 11,182 meters, completing an unprecedented “ultra-long run” beneath the Yangtze River.

China unveils Type 054B frigate, says AI cuts air defence blind spots

0

BEIJING: An official media report on Sunday disclosed multiple new developments regarding the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy’s Type 054B guided-missile frigate Qinzhou. The report highlighted one of its most distinctive features: a next-generation architecture powered by advanced AI algorithms, enabling near-zero blind spots in air defense. Experts say the Type 054B represents a major leap in integrated combat capability and positions the vessel among the most advanced frigates in service today.

In the video released on Sunday, Zhang Yunpeng, a crew member of the Qinzhou, described the ship’s defining feature in one word: “new.”

He noted that the platform incorporates enhanced stealth design, with antennas and sensors integrated and optimized to significantly reduce radar cross-section. The vessel is also built entirely with domestically produced components. Compared with earlier ships, it boasts greater propulsion efficiency, lower fuel consumption, extended range, and an expanded combat radius.

In addition, the ship adopts a more streamlined command structure. This “flattened” command system enables more efficient and scientifically optimized interaction between commanders and weapon systems, improving overall operational responsiveness.

Zhang emphasized that the most notable advancement lies in the ship’s new architectural framework. Taking air defense as an example, he explained that stronger computing power and more advanced algorithms, combined with AI assistance, significantly reduce or even eliminate blind zones in detection and engagement in air defense combat. This allows weapons systems to achieve greater operational effectiveness.

The report also highlighted the vessel’s main gun system, which represents a newer generation of naval artillery. During the current training cycle, the system has fired hundreds of rounds without a single malfunction, providing a solid foundation for the rapid generation of combat capability for the Type 054B.

The footage showed the Type 054B frigate Qinzhou conducting formation training alongside Type 055 and Type 052D destroyers.

The report also highlighted the ship’s role in anti-submarine operations during joint exercises with amphibious assault ships, underscoring the frigate’s core mission as a protective escort.

Zhang recalled one such exercise, in which torpedo threats were introduced during the final phase of a drill. Initially responding according to standard single-ship defense procedures, the crew later realized the incoming torpedoes were targeting an amphibious assault ship rather than their own vessel.

“In that moment, we made a high-speed maneuver to place ourselves between the torpedoes and the amphibious assault ship,” Zhang said. “Everyone on board understood the significance of that decision: it likely meant sacrificing ourselves to protect the amphibious assault ship. But whether in a carrier group or an amphibious task force, the frigate’s mission is to serve as the final line of defense – the last shield.”

On January 22, 2025, China’s first Type 054B frigate, the Luohe, was commissioned at a naval port in Qingdao, East China’s Shandong Province.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, the Type 054B has a displacement of approximately 5,000 tons. This new-generation frigate, independently developed and constructed by China, boasts advancements in stealth technology, combat command systems and firepower integration, significantly enhancing overall performance. With strong capabilities for comprehensive combat operations and diverse military missions, the warship will play a vital role in enhancing the overall combat effectiveness of naval task forces, Xinhua said.

The second Type 054B frigate of the PLA Navy, the Qinzhou, appeared in a poster released by the PLA South China Sea Fleet on April 12, 2025. Shortly after that, the vessel was rapidly deployed for realistic training in the South China Sea. During its first live-fire exercise, the crew achieved a direct hit, successfully sinking a towed target.

Chinese military affairs expert Zhang Xuefeng described the Type 054B as one of the most advanced frigates in the world. He told the Global Times that the vessel achieves a balance across anti-submarine, anti-ship, and air defense capabilities, while leveraging new technologies to deliver a highly cost-effective design.

According to Zhang Xuefeng, this makes the Type 054B a strong candidate for large-scale production, enabling the PLA Navy to deploy more vessels to address diverse maritime threats.

Zhang Junshe, another Chinese military affairs expert, told the Global Times that the Type 054B is an upgraded derivative of the Type 054A frigate, featuring greater displacement and longer operational range. These improvements allow it to undertake blue-water missions, including coordinated operations with carrier strike groups and advanced destroyers, as well as regional air defense and anti-submarine warfare tasks.

Xi calls for whole-of-society push on tree planting

0

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called for mobilizing the whole society to actively participate in afforestation, stressing that a sound ecological environment is shared by all and requires the joint efforts of all.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks when taking part in a voluntary tree-planting activity in Beijing.

Xi and other Party and state leaders, including Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang and Li Xi, arrived at the tree-planting site in Changping District of Beijing in the morning. Xi waved to the crowd to extend his greetings before picking up a shovel to join the activity. He planted saplings of multiple types of trees.

While planting the trees, he asked the children at the site about their studies and daily lives, their participation in labor and sports, and their involvement in tree-planting activities. He stressed the importance of setting great goals at a young age, fostering a love of learning, work and nature, and striving to become pillars of society.

Xi also talked with officials and members of the public on site. He said that China has seen sustained increases in both forest area and stock volume, as well as a continuous reduction in desertified and sandy land areas. This has made it the country with the largest and fastest increase in greening in the world.

Xi hailed the Ecological and Environmental Code adopted in March, noting that it further strengthens the legal foundation for building a Beautiful China.

Afforestation is an important task in building a Beautiful China, Xi said, urging sustained and solid efforts to advance the initiative.

This year marks the first year of implementing the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) and the 45th anniversary of the nationwide voluntary tree-planting campaign, Xi noted.

Under the new circumstances, efforts to advance greening programs should place greater emphasis on improving quality, developing related industries, and delivering benefits to the people, he said.

Xi emphasized the importance of facilitating the channels for realizing the value of ecological products and advancing urban and rural greening in a coordinated manner.

Shehbaz vows relief for masses as govt rolls out measures amid fuel crisis

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday assured relief for lower- and middle-income groups as the government grapples with the impact of rising fuel prices triggered by the global energy crisis linked to the Iran war.

Chairing a high-level meeting to review petroleum stocks and public relief measures, the premier said the government was actively working to cushion the burden on vulnerable segments of society. He reiterated that “the economically weaker sections will not be left alone in this hour of difficulty.”

Officials briefed the meeting that a targeted relief scheme was being finalised in coordination with provincial governments, particularly focusing on motorcycle and rickshaw owners. The registration process for beneficiaries is being streamlined to ensure that subsidies reach the intended segments through a transparent and efficient mechanism.

The initiative follows the government’s earlier announcement of a subsidised fuel scheme aimed at easing the financial strain on daily wage earners and transport workers who are most affected by rising petroleum prices.

The prime minister also highlighted austerity measures introduced in recent weeks, including significant cuts in development spending, restrictions on non-essential expenditures, and a reduction of up to 60 per cent in the use of official government vehicles. He noted that these steps were part of a broader strategy to conserve fuel and manage economic pressures.

In a key decision, the government has opted against passing the full burden of rising global oil prices onto consumers, choosing instead to divert savings towards public relief initiatives. The premier added that a digital system would be deployed to ensure fair distribution of subsidies and minimise leakages.

The meeting was informed that Pakistan currently maintains adequate fuel reserves, with supply chains operating smoothly and no disruptions reported. Authorities are also making forward arrangements to secure future supplies in light of evolving global market conditions.

An audit report presented by the Intelligence Bureau reviewed the implementation of conservation measures and the progress of the ongoing austerity campaign. Officials noted that the recent increase in high-octane fuel prices for large vehicles had not impacted jet fuel prices, while sufficient stocks of essential medicines were also available across the country.

The discussion also covered Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach aimed at easing tensions in the Middle East, with the government maintaining that proactive engagement had helped stabilise both fuel availability and broader economic conditions during the ongoing crisis.

Qatar lauds Pakistan’s peace efforts as FM Dar strengthens regional diplomatic ties amid Middle East tensions

ISLAMABAD: Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, on Saturday lauded Pakistan for its proactive role in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East through dialogue and diplomacy during a phone call with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.

The conversation comes amid heightened tensions in the region following the US and Israeli air strikes last month that resulted in the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior officials, triggering retaliatory attacks by Tehran on US military installations across the Gulf. The escalation has significantly broadened the scope of the conflict, raising concerns over regional security, energy supplies, and trade routes.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), the two leaders “discussed prevailing regional and international developments and emphasised the urgent need for de-escalation.” The Qatari side expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to foster peace and stability through constructive diplomacy.

The statement added that both countries reaffirmed the long-standing and deep-rooted ties between Pakistan and Qatar, agreeing to maintain close coordination on evolving developments in the region.

In a parallel development, FM Dar also held a telephonic conversation with his Indonesian counterpart Sugiono, discussing bilateral matters and regional and international developments. Both sides reiterated strong fraternal ties between Pakistan and Indonesia and committed to remaining in close contact.

Earlier on Saturday, MOFA announced that the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Egypt would visit Islamabad on March 29–30 at the invitation of FM Dar. These nations, along with Pakistan, have been actively engaged in mediation efforts between Washington and Tehran following the war launched by the US and Israel on February 28.

Officials said Pakistan had conveyed a US proposal for ending the conflict to Tehran and offered to host peace talks, with Iranian authorities indicating that any negotiations could be held either in Pakistan or Turkey. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif publicly offered Islamabad as a venue for US-Iran talks, a move further boosted when former US President Donald Trump reposted the offer on his Truth Social platform, signaling Washington’s tacit endorsement of Pakistan’s emerging role as a regional mediator.

FM Dar confirmed on Thursday that indirect communications between the US and Iran are underway via Pakistan, with assistance from Turkiye and Egypt, highlighting Islamabad’s growing influence in efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.

Thousands of rallies planned in US cities for ‘No Kings’ protest against Trump

0

WASHINGTON: Thousands of rallies are expected across the United States on Saturday in the latest “No Kings” protest against the policies of President Donald Trump and his administration.

Organisers say that more than 3,200 events are planned in all 50 states for what they hope could be the largest single-day nonviolent protest in US history. The two previous No Kings events attracted millions of participants.

Flagship rallies will take place in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, and Minnesota’s Twin Cities, but two-thirds of participants are expected from outside major city centres, a nearly 40% jump for smaller communities from the movement’s first mobilisation last June, organisers said.

“The defining story of this Saturday’s mobilisation is not just how many people are protesting, but where they are protesting,” said Leah Greenberg, Co-Founder of Indivisible, the group that started the No Kings movement last year and led the planning of Saturday’s events.

With midterm elections later this year in the US, organisers say they’ve seen a surge in the number of people organising events and registering to participate in deeply Republican states such as Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and Utah.

Competitive suburban areas that have helped decide national elections are seeing “huge” increases in interest, Greenberg said, citing Pennsylvania’s Bucks and Delaware counties, East Cobb and Forsyth in Georgia, and Scottsdale and Chandler in Arizona as examples.

“Voters who decide elections, the people who do the door knocking and the voter registration and all of the work of turning protests into power, they are taking to the streets right now, and they are furious,” she said.

In a statement, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson dismissed the rallies as “Trump Derangement Therapy Sessions” of interest only to journalists.

Saturday will mark the third No Kings Day of Action. The movement launched last year on Trump’s birthday, June 14, and drew an estimated four to six million people spread across roughly 2,100 sites nationwide.

The second mobilisation in October involved an estimated seven million participants across more than 2,700 cities, according to a crowd-sourcing analysis published by prominent data journalist G. Elliott Morris.

That October event was largely fueled by a backlash against a government shutdown, an aggressive crackdown by federal immigration authorities, and the deployment of National Guard troops to major cities.

Saturday’s protest comes amid what organisers called a call to action against the bombardment of Iran by the US and Israel, a conflict that is now four weeks old.

Deirdre Schifeling, chief political and advocacy officer for the American Civil Liberties Union, said protests have led to tangible results.

“Whenever we stand up to President Trump’s abuses of power, like most bullies, he backs down,” she said, citing administration reversals following earlier demonstrations over National Guard deployments in Los Angeles and ICE killings of two American citizens in Minneapolis.

FIA maps human smuggling network as govt orders sweeping anti-corruption crackdown

ISLAMABAD: Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency, Usman Anwar, on Saturday informed Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi that the agency has compiled a comprehensive database of individuals involved in human smuggling.

The development was shared during a detailed briefing at the FIA headquarters, where the minister reviewed the agency’s performance and ongoing reforms.

The FIA chief said a transparent and effective accountability system had been introduced within the organisation, alongside the formation of working groups and coordination committees to enhance collaboration with other institutions.

He added that modern technology is being deployed to intensify action against immigration-related crimes, including human smuggling and money laundering.

During the visit, Interior Minister Naqvi ordered a sweeping crackdown on corruption across government institutions, directing authorities to strictly enforce a zero-tolerance policy in line with the vision of Shehbaz Sharif.

He further stated that the FIA’s reform process would be completed by December, stressing the need to monitor online advertisements offering overseas employment and to raise public awareness about fraudulent schemes.

Naqvi emphasised transforming the FIA into a frontline force against organised crime and assured the agency of full governmental support in achieving this objective.

The minister also inspected ongoing infrastructure development projects at the headquarters and directed officials to expedite completion of construction work.

Meanwhile, the FIA has stepped up internal accountability, penalising 214 officials over the last four months of 2025 amid growing complaints of human trafficking and corruption. Of these, 76 officials were dismissed from service, nine demoted, two removed, and 127 awarded various punishments.
